Regular cleaning = less hard work
Perhaps the best toilet cleaning tip we can give is to not leave it too long in between cleans. Not cleaning regularly leaves the limescale to build up, to the point where it is difficult to shift, so keep on top of your toilet cleaning chores and you'll find it easier to clean.
Get prepared
When you're cleaning the bathroom, before you tackle the sink or bath, squirt some disinfectant around the toilet bowl and leave it to do its work. That way, by the time you work your way around to the toilet, a lot of the dirt, germs and bacteria will already have been removed.
Clean from bottom to top
It might sound strange, but starting with the base and working your way up to the cistern and seat is an effective way to clean the toilet. Just remember to use a clean cloth or wipe to do the handle, as you don't want to transfer germs.
Use a toilet brush
You can't clean under the rim of the toilet effectively unless you employ a toilet brush, so make sure yours is in good shape and that you clean it effectively with bleach and water.
Don't ignore the seat joints
Removing the toilet seat every few cleans will ensure you can keep the toilet seat joints clean, as urine tends to gather in and around these joints and can result in an unpleasant smell that your regular cleaning just can't remove.
Keep fresh after flushing
Use a toilet rim block or in-cistern cleaner to keep your toilet fresh after use.
Homemade toilet cleaning remedies

- Make toilet cleaning bombs to freshen the bowl using tea tree oil, baking soda and vinegar.
- Drop an Alka Seltzer into the bowl and leave for around 10 minutes and use your brush to scrub, then flush and rinse for sparkling results
- Use a grapefruit dipped in salt to clean the toilet and leave your bathroom smelling zesty fresh!
